Are onions poisonous to guinea pigs?

Did you know that Onions are a NO! for guinea pigs?

Your probably not one to curl up with a guinea pig on your lap and a bowl of caramelized onions as a snack but to each their own right? My cute little guinea pig Theona looked at me with delight and her nose sniffing the air. She wanted some! However, onions are not a healthy treat or food for guinea pigs even if they are carmalized and cooked. Guinea pigs should have fresh and not cooked vegetables regardless.

I knew that I should not give her any but I did a little digging. Onions are full of beneficial vitamins and minerals and can help with anemia in people. They are blood purifiers and are altogether pretty healthy. Just because they are healthy for me, doesn't mean she can have some!

They tend to be toxic to animals. However, even the smallest amount given to a guinea pig can be fatal. There is something in an onion called disulfide that can cause issues with your guinea pig's blood.

The onion can also cause digestive issues. Onion-poisoning in guinea pigs is serious and seeking your vet is important. You can get free vet advice from chewy free here.
